Cat Stevens with his 5-man band made a spectacular comeback last Saturday at Hovet, Stockholm. He started his tour in an exclusive concert for Scandinavia. The tour will last until June 3rd in the European Union only, except for Rabat, Morocco. His presenting himself in a few Swedish sententses opened up and after a few songs he had the arena rocking, reminiscing and crying for more (Stevens father is a Cypriot and his mother is Swedish) There was a mixture of new and old and he switched between 12-stringed guitar, dobro and Western style guitar. The old songs from the sixties and seventies still hold, each one of them making the audience go crazy, a perfect surrounding for anyone "coming back"... Stevens resumed his rich career in 1977 and after a silence of about 33 years, it was due to his son giving him the guitar and encouraging him to play again, that made the idea of a comeback tour to evolve. Leaving his present residence in Dubai, he started contacting some musicians from the past and some new to start up a new band. This was in London. He had a slide-show holding the number of songs which will eventually create a musical that he is working on. There was a reference to the tough period after September 11, 2001, when he was not allowed to enter the U.S. and was on a WANTED- poster, but there was a happy ending to the story. He played one new dylanesque song. Also he performed "Heaven must have programmed you"(only for lovers) and songs like "I am followed by a moonshadow"," Morning has broken" and set the sensitive and loving audience on fire. The song "My people" was also sung, one that he wrote during the demonstrations in Egypt (his wife is Egyptian). The band was excellently adding something new and heavier to his sound. Sticking to the truth, Stevens recorded an album in 2006, "An other cup" and lately "Roadsinger", so his new career is actually already running. Still, what is remarkable about Cat Stevens is his warmth, his humanity and his capability as a singer-songwriter and above all his constant seeking for truth, which has been the red thread all through his long career.
